Gaming / Field note 01 · Final Fantasy XIV
Prepared, still uncertain.
A fishing window is an opportunity. It is not a promise.
High-end encounters reward repeatable execution. Fishing adds a different lesson: preparation can improve an attempt without controlling its outcome. Both belong in how I think about mastery.

A few ideas inside this story.

Constraints
A limit changes which choices are actually available. Start with the feasible set before looking for the most attractive answer.
In this story: Preparation still has to meet the right opportunity window.
- Three outlets. One Monday decision. One bounded Monday decision, rather than an unlimited wish list.
- The cost of a stop. A tyre advantage has to repay a stop before the laps run out.
Uncertainty
A plausible outcome is not a guarantee. Distinguish randomness in an attempt from uncertainty about the assumptions you chose.
In this story: Explore cumulative chance under an explicit independence assumption.
- The cost of a stop. Test one decision against three conditions without inventing probabilities.
Iteration
A useful next attempt changes something for a reason. Keep the observation that led to the change, not just the latest result.
In this story: Separate what to improve next time from what chance controls.
- Three outlets. One Monday decision. Follow the lessons from building and checking the prototype.
Model boundaries
A model answers the question it represents. State what it leaves out before carrying its result into a real decision.
In this story: Hypothetical per-window inputs are not measured fish catch rates.
- Three outlets. One Monday decision. An academic prototype is not evidence of a deployed business result.
- The cost of a stop. A projected catch is not a predicted pass or victory.
01 / An observation
One catch: Skyfrond (opens fish information in a new tab)
The successful attempt felt almost abrupt. After the prerequisite fish and the intuition trigger, I landed the target on the first cast of that intuition phase. The final moment was short; reaching it had taken at least five or six windows.
That contrast matters. Earlier opportunities could be consumed by the prerequisite, the wrong bite, a mooching detour, or an escape. Counting only the final cast erases the part of the experience that made the catch difficult.
This is why I push back when a neat completion model feels more certain than play itself. A useful model should expose the chain of opportunities, then admit which probabilities we do not actually know.
Three layers of opportunity
- 01
The window
An eligible opportunity exists. Being available for it is a separate constraint from knowing when it happens.
- 02
The prerequisite
The setup still has to succeed. A window does not mean the prerequisite fish or intuition will arrive on demand.
- 03
The conversion
The target must bite and stay on the line. Good preparation cannot turn every eligible attempt into a guaranteed catch.
An illustrative experiment
Same preparation. Different runs.
These are hypothetical inputs, not FFXIV catch-rate measurements. Assume every attended window is independent and has the same chance of success.
Interactive controls require JavaScript. This fixed example uses 20% per window across six windows.
- Windows for 50% cumulative chance
- 4 windows
- Windows for 90% cumulative chance
- 11 windows
Make the next attempt more informative
Name the actual bottleneck
Record whether the attempt ended before the setup, during the prerequisite, or at the target. Those are different failures and do not justify the same adjustment.
Keep observation separate from assumption
A quick success is an observation. A per-window success rate is a model parameter until supported by enough relevant evidence. Neither one lucky catch nor one bad run establishes the rate.
Judge the controllable process
Review preparation, decisions, and time use before treating the outcome as a verdict on execution. Repeated attempts should improve the process even while the result remains uncertain.
